For Devin Marshall, life has changed forever. Once a witch on the run, he has found his niche among a group of like-minded witches in a coven of his own. Now, also leader to a pack of newly formed werewolves, Devin will need both groups fighting beside him if he plans to keep the people he loves alive. Initially he has his hands full contending with Boston mob vendettas, rival covens, and a global network of deadly werewolf clans who want him dead. Unfortunately for Devin, things go from bad to worse when long forgotten gods rise, threatening to destroy not only the newly formed coven/clan but the majority of the world as well. Author Peter Saenz pulls out all stops in this high-action, suspense filled sequel to his previous hit novel Coven of Wolves.

I want to give this a five star review, I really do, but by the second book this is already going the way of the Eragon series.

I began the first book, "Coven of Wolves" a few weeks ago. Loved it. While the character development was rather weak at times, I liked the overall story. Being a newer author I was willing to give him some liberties.

The character descriptions are rather lacking. I have the impression that the main character is a good looking, smooth skinned, dark haired twink. That's it. Through through the rest of the book I really don't grow any affection for his physical characteristics or oddities he may display. Same for the rest of the characters. All very generic. Ask me to describe what Harry Potter or Lestat the Vampire looks like and I could do it to a T.

Next, I really dislike how the author flagrantly uses magic to solve the protagonist's every problem. At the start of the first book it felt like more of a struggle, there was a learning curve. Now, especially evident in the fight scenes, he will cast a spell, or use his "force" magic to hurl a chair or log at someone with no apparent repercussions. The author may say he feels slightly drained or taxed, then the character will unleash an even more complicated set of spells. Where does his seemingly infinite energy come from? I realize the character Devin is a witch, but the story claims he is 24 and really just learned the finer points of his craft. How is he able to do the things he does like move objects, teleport, and transcend his body, even with his familiar at his side? The Eragon series went in this direction and by the last two books I could barely finish it.

I dislike when characters use magic to solve every single problem they have effortlessly. It should be more of a struggle. A more finite resource.

What I do like is the developing relationship between Devin and Tobias. Alas, I'm only in the first half of the second book and already it also feels very generic. Have they disagreed or fought once? Jealousy? Overprotectiveness? Did one find the Grindr app open on the other's scrying stone? Give me some depth, please!

On a positive note, the story development is great. I love the wolves' and mafia interactions. And the gods and goddesses intercedence is also great.

All in all I will finish this story and anticipate an improvement in a third novel release. It is also refreshing to read a story with two gay main characters, Devin and Tobias, which doesn't turn into a smut novel as so many end up doing. Although it could use a bit more fiery passion in the bedroom, tastefully. The intimacy scenes are also extremely generic. Just a kiss and hug here and there is all we get.

Coven of Wolves Book II Blood Ties (Audible Audio Edition) Peter Saenz Robert G Davis doorQcom Publishing Books Reviews

Having read the first novel, Coven of Wolves, I have to say this was a wonderful follow up. I enjoyed the growth of the characters, especially seeing how Devin grows into his role as leader. The action scenes don't disappoint, and the description truly pulls the reader into the fray, keeping the frenetic action going and keeping the heart-rate elevated. It's like literary cardio. If you like magic, spiritual avatars, and even mob ties, this book is definitely for you, but I do recommend reading the first book beforehand so you know the characters and plot, but you'll easily get sucked into the drama. Highly recommended.
Just finished reading Coven of Wolves 2 Blood Ties by Peter Saenz. It was easy to slip back into the world he created in Coven of Wolves and find out what was going to happen next. The author’s imagination is impressive and he is able to bring his reader into the world handily. A definite recommend to get this book and read it. You will enjoy it.
