Hard to believe Recollections was written years after the Civil War ended in 1865--and "ghosted" by Ida Tarbell, mostly known for her monopoly-busting writings. Dana was one of very few "on-the-scene" scribes who gained favor with Northern generals, mainly U>S> Grant. Another rather interesting point is that Dana was appointed Assistant Secretary of War by Edwin Stanton which gave him entry into just about anywhere war-like conditions existed. He covered both Grant's Vicksburg campaign and his Overland campaign which led to ending the war after some 4plus years. Jefferson Davis' imprisonment was another interesting side note. All-in-all and excellent read, highly recommended.

A good perspective from the view of someone working in the war department. Quick insights but not apt of facts or figures.
I liked Charles Dana's book. It is breezy and topical, not detailed or exhaustive. But it does its job well.
Mr. Dana had a uniqe perspective on the Civil War. First enlisted to go "out West" and check out "this General Grant" by Edwin Stanton, Dana soon became a trusted advisor to both the President and the Secretary of War. He apparently spent most of his war service in the field, at the side of various union generals so that Washington would have a trusted and immediate voice to report on what was really happening on the various fronts. His advice helped advance officers Dana thought effective and cashire those whose service was detrimental to the cause of the Union. His advice and counsel was also influential on various war policy issues.
One belives that Dana had much to do in helping Grant, Sherman and others overcome their reputations and distance from Washington to reach their appointed places from where Union success ultimately sprung. He is a concise writer and offers strong opinions on personalities associated with the Union's management and prosecution of the war. These are interesting because Dana is often quoted in more recent books on the war. His story helps show why these quotes are meaningful as well as tells an interesting tale of an individual who can best be described as the highest ranking civilian in the field from 1863-1865.
An interesting book from a unique vantage point.
Charles Dana is normally just a side bar in most history of General Grant. It is interesting to see what part he played in the war.
Excellent analysis of tactics and characters, by the Secretary of War's personal representative to the Union armies , Charles A. Dana.
It is great that someone was able to have written such a history of things that happened during the war and to clear up some of the things that really went on
Unique perspective on the Union command system in the last year of the civil war. Dana, being somewhat unbiased, was able to offer opinions that provided a more broad interpretation of decisions made by Grant and his commanders. Good read and necessary for anyone's library on the war.
Mr. Dana was a clear and concise writer very modern in tone, He was well placed,an eye witness to important events, from a vantage point at the top level of of the US administration, and on the ground as an investigator. I especially like his coverage of the siege of Vicksburg and his picture of U S Grant.
